Cynthia is a highly skilled and experienced architect who specializes in laboratory and health education design. Nationally recognized, she has designed over 2.6 million square feet (SF) of academic and science/research facilities.

Cynthia excels in assessing client needs and developing plans to meet them, whether it’s a small renovation, adaptive reuse of space or a complex research building. She leads clients through the process, from project definition to programming, through design and project completion. Cynthia was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects in 2013 in recognition to her advancement of the profession through outstanding practice. A frequent speaker at conferences on the subject of research and clinical laboratory design, Cynthia is published in R&D Magazine, Healthcare Design and Laboratory Design. Prior to establishing her own firm Scientia Architects, Cynthia was a partner of FKP | CannonDesign, leading the Science and Technology practice in Houston.

When not designing labs, Cynthia is involved in her church leading the evening women’s bible studies, president of her HOA, treasurer of an investment club and looks forward to her annual “girls trip” to Mexico that started in 1993.

Cynthia’s experience includes

  • Boston Children’s Hospital (Boston, MA) – Research master plan, which resulted in a multi-project initiative, including long-term growth needs for research and offices. *
  • Children’s National Medical Center (Washington, DC) – Research master plan and Walter Reed Feasibility Study – evaluated needs and proposed projects to aid in system growth over the next 20 years resulting in a new off campus Research Institute building at the Walter Reed campus. *
  • IWK Health Centre (Halifax, Nova Scotia) – Assisted Agnew Peckham with functional program and master plan for the Research Centre’s wet laboratories, animal facilities and core support services, approximately 100,000 SF*.
  • Rice University (Houston, TX) –Multiple projects, including: Keck Hall Bioengineering & Biochemistry Building renovation/ additions; Physics Feasibility study and MD Anderson Biological Laboratories renovation, all totaling over 250,000 gross SF. *
  • Texas A&M University (College Station, TX) – Cater-Matill Hall Renovation. (Bryan, TX) Health Professions Education Building, Medical Research and Education Building totaling 265,000 SF*
  • Texas Biomedical Research Institute, (San Antonio, TX) – Earl Slick Research Building,
  • Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston, TX) – Feigin Research Building – Program for renovation of 12 floors and vertical expansion of 8 floors for a total of approximately 400,000 gross SF for laboratories, offices, a training center and expansion of the vivarium. *
  • The Methodist Hospital (Houston, TX) – Microbiology Lab replacement, Pathology Master Plan*
  • The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (Little Rock, AR) – Multiple projects, including: Winthrop Rockefeller Cancer Institute Laboratories (12 story, 330,000 SF); Animal Facilities master plan, WPRCI Grant Support, and ROIDA Animal Facility. *
  • The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) – Multiple projects, including cGMP; Cancer Prevention Building (380,000 SF); Campus Redevelopment Plan; Basic Research and Education Building (Bastrop, TX). *
